Green Business - Make a Difference in Unusual Places

>

We all want to make a difference for the environment – but it is sometimes difficult to come up with ideas of how to do it.

The interesting thing is that most ideas that I have come across not only reduce the impact on the environment, they also make economic sense.

For instance, telecommuting

The idea of having people conduct their work from home (or a satellite office near home) is a great idea for the environment.

Telecommuting means that less people are physically traveling to work. Less people commuting also means less fuel being burned, leading to less CO2 emissions and less particulate matter being released into the air.

But it keeps getting better - less people on the road also means that the road is receiving less wear and tear. Hey, we’re not going to have to repair it with hot asphalt nearly as often. The whole process of building and repair roads creates pollution – let’s reduce the need for it.

In addition, the less people on the road also means less traffic congestion. If we have less congestion we have less cars sitting still while their engines run and produce exhaust. We also have less stress on our staff as they fight with traffic to make it to work and home.

I’m going to share some more thoughts on how businesses can become more green with telecommuting in future posts, but in the mean time, let me know what you think about it.
