A Hybrid Moving Truck… Excellent

>

I keep saying that we need to make steps towards improvement that are sustainable. It appears that Atlas has a similar opinion.

Here’s an excerpt from an article about the first hybrid moving van.

“Trucks are part of the economy,” Atlas Van Lines agent William Duggan said. “You need to have them, but if we can do less damage to the environment and let us lighten a footprint, I am all in favor of it and hope other people follow the example.”

There it is right there - economics and environmentally friendly working together in order to create sustainability. Let’s hope that we see more of these trucks on the road in the near future (hauling environmentally friendly products).

In fact, consulting on these trucks might be a nice new profit center for Atlas – just be responsible about it and don’t overcharge. Remember, it is about the environment.

Sustainability - Both Environmentally and Economically

>

Want to live in a more sustainable manner - well of course you have to consider your finances. If you didn’t, it wouldn’t be sustainable.

Quite often those who advocate a green life have no concern for the costs involved. They just want to make change.

I would argue that change that is not sustainable is no change at all . People will revert to their old ways if they can not afford the new way of living.

Here’s how a contractor put it in a recent article.

Contractor Chaden Halfhill of Silent Rivers Design + Build in Clive says being environmentally friendly is a common discussion he has with potential clients.

“People are first interested in the design and aesthetics, then price and then the sustainability and how to green a project,” he says.

The pocketbook nearly always is a factor. “They want to know what the long-term payback is,” Halfhill says.

Rather than fighting this trend and trying to convince people that cost shouldn’t matter, we should be embracing it. We should be letting people know how they can have less impact on the environment with little to no impact on their environment.

I’m going to be sharing some more thoughts about this, but in the mean time you can read the rest of the article at DesMoinesRegister.Com.

Green Products - Well Done Proctor and Gamble

>

The problem I have with many companies that offer “green products” is that some of them are offering conventional products with a “green label”.

Proctor and Gamble is taking the environment seriously. They are doing their part to reduce their CO2 emissions and create environmentally friendly products. In addition to that they are actually measuring their performance in relation to their sustainability goals.

Wow, a company that is keeping itself accountable.

The company also plans to deliver a 20 percent reduction (per unit of production) in carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, water usage and disposed waste from P&G plants, for a total reduction over the decade of at least 50 percent. P&G’s original target was set at a 10 percent reduction.

P&G established five sustainability strategies in 2007 with measurable goals in key areas. The company released its tenth annual sustainability report in November 2008 that stated the company was on track to meet or exceed its five-year goals.

As I’ve mentioned before, I have know problem with a company making a profit, even on green products. After all, if there is no profit, then there is no incentive for the company.

What I do have a problem with is companies gouging their customers or marketing products that provide little improvement.

Well done P&G, you deserve a (reasonable) profit.
