Energy Audits for a Green Home

>

I recommend energy audit’s for every home. It gives you a clear idea of where you are losing the most energy, and what are the most practical ways of fixing the problem.

Here’s an article about one family’s energy audit experience. I particularly like the practical approach they had in this quote.

Fortunately, most experts agree that the biggest bang for your efficiency dollar can be had by addressing the lowest hanging fruit: sealing the cracks and gaps with caulk and self-expanding foam, and placing adequate insulation in your attic. So that’s what we’ve asked the guys at Green Tree to do.

Yes you can replace the all the windows in a home… but you can also use a $5 tube of caulking in the right places and make a significant difference.

The key question is, which one are you going to start with?

DLink Green - A Good Idea

>

I must admit, the thought of “green” routers, network cards, etc seems a bit far fetched. DLink however seems to have a good idea. They are introducing power saving network devices. You can learn more about the philosophy at

Green Products - Big Choices to Little Ones, They All Make a Difference

>

Here’s an interesting article that discusses a whole gamut of “green” products. It starts off with super efficient windows and bio-diesel and then moves on to green laundry detergent choices.

I find it curious that the author discusses the environmental benefits of bio-diesel without mentioning the drawbacks. There is a significant drawback from burning plant based bio-diesel – it produces higher CO2 emissions than traditional hydrocarbon based diesel fuel.

This is covered in the EPAs document, A Comprehensive Analysis of Biodiesel Impacts on Exhaust Emissions.

For what it’s worth, there are also many benefits to bio-diesel. I just believe that we should educate ourselves about all aspects of the choices we make.

Here’s a quote from the article that I think is insightful

But now we can’t afford the more ecologically intelligent products (like Bronwyn’s windows and my biodiesel) because they usually have a higher price tag. Now more than ever, we will ignore eco-choices. And I can’t really blame anyone for doing so — if you’ve been laid off, who has the bandwidth to worry about the rainforest?

But I do think that, as a nation of consumers, we can make small choices that affect big change. In the grocery store, for example.
