Car Pooling the Family Way
Regular readers will know that when it comes to environmentally friendly changes I’m an advocate of “picking the low hanging fruit”. That is, let’s start with the changes that are easy and inexpensive to implement. The changes I like best are the ones that not only help the environment, but also save us money. That kind of change is easily sustainable.
In the past I have written about the benefits of telecommuting. I have been planning on discussing how we need to also consider carpooling. After all, it doesn’t make much sense having cars heading down the road in the same direction with three empty seats.
I have always geared my thoughts towards commuting to work. What I had not spent much time thinking about was family activities.
I just read an article at RaisingAFamily.Net where Amy describes DivideTheRide.Org.
Here’s an excerpt of what she says…
What a great idea. Let’s start passing the word on about this site. I’ll be adding it to my resources section.
Let’s Not Forget That There Are 3 Rs
We tend to focus on the concept of recycling - after all, with blue bins in our lives its so easy to do so.
But there is more to green living than just recycling. In fact, recycling should be the last of the 3 Rs.
The first two are reduce and reuse. If we can actually reduce the amount that we recycle by decreasing our consumption and reusing what we already have the environment will benefit.
Saving Money and the Environment… Sounds Good
Here’s an interesting article about one of my favorite topics… saving money while saving the environment. The author points out that Dollar stores now carry a number of environmentally friendly products.
I will add the caution here that I added to the comments section of the article. It’s important to remember quality as one factor in buying products. There is no point in buying a dollar store product if it is going to wear out and need replacing long before an equivalent from a traditional store would. It doesn’t help the environment and it doesn’t help your wallet.
That being said, there are many products listed here that we probably don’t need to worry about as far as that goes.
Here’s one idea from the article.
